The production of polypropylene pellets at Merseyside began with propylene, an enhanced gas received in reservoir cars. Propylene was bought from several refineries in England that produced it in the course of refining crude oil into fuel. In the 1st stage of the production process, polymerization, the propylene gas was along with a diluent (or solvent) in a large pressure ship.
